Island of Guanyin

Island of Guanyin is the first book in English about Mount Putuo, one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in China. Over the centuries, poems, biographies, maps, and legends about Mount Putuo, as well as descriptions of its landscape and temples, have been collected in a series of local histories known as “gazetteers.” Following the structure of a gazetteer, this book shows how this Buddhist sacred site has been constructed through textual records in variety of genres.
