And yet, because he would naturally have shunned attention being drawn to him, it seems all the more important that this book be produced in his honour. Perceptive, thoughtful and unassuming to a fault, Steph van der Merwe has left an indelible mark on those he has taught and worked with. However, his intellect and industry has had a far wider impact than at his own place of work.
